With contributions from Ruth Reichl, Éric Ripert, Joan Nathan, Michael Solomonov, Dan Barber, Yotam Ottolenghi, Tom Colicchio, Maira Kalman, Melissa Clark, and many more!

Tablet’s list of the 100 most Jewish foods is not about the most popular Jewish foods, or the tastiest, or even the most enduring. It’s a list of the most significant foods culturally and historically to the Jewish people, explored deeply with essays, recipes, stories, and context. Some of the dishes are no longer cooked at home, and some are not even dishes in the traditional sense (store-bought cereal and Stella D’oro cookies, for example). The entire list is up for debate, which is what makes this book so much fun. Many of the foods are delicious (such as babka and shakshuka). Others make us wonder how they’ve survived as long as they have (such as unhatched chicken eggs and jellied calves’ feet). As expected, many Jewish (and now universal) favorites like matzo balls, pickles, cheesecake, blintzes, and chopped liver make the list. The recipes are global and represent all contingencies of the Jewish experience. Contributors include Ruth Reichl, Éric Ripert, Joan Nathan, Michael Solomonov, Dan Barber, Gail Simmons, Yotam Ottolenghi, Tom Colicchio, Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs, Maira Kalman, Action Bronson, Daphne Merkin, Shalom Auslander, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and Phil Rosenthal, among many others. Presented in a gifty package, The 100 Most Jewish Foods is the perfect book to dip into, quote from, cook from, and launch a spirited debate.

"I am not Jewish, but I love Jewish foods. And my boyfriend is (what he calls) the most non-Jewish Jew you'd ever meet. I have a feeling when I start mentioning these foods to him, he will wax nostalgic. Maybe I'll make him some Matzoh Brei this weekend."

  • I actually bought this for my young daughter! Her father is Jewish but unfortunately, she doesn’t have as much of a connection with his side as I hoped for. I’m not Jewish and admittedly a little uneducated about the faith. I’m hoping to at least help her learn a little about where she comes from and some of the culture. There’s great bits of info about Jewish foods with some warming anecdotes. So far we’ve made the matzoh balls and they were wonderful.
  • i loved this book, it was in my mailbox and i opened it and read it end to end non stop . i had a great evening rmembering and learning,. the little history lessons are wonderful. i will buy this book for many of my friends. best money i have spent in a long time.
  • I love this book! It’s so cute and funny and brings back memories of growing up in a mostly Jewish neighborhood on Long Island. However, one essential item was left off the list...MALLOMARS!! I will definitely by buying another copy for my daughter who lives Northern California. She’s in the midst of building a shop in Berkeley which will be recreating New York style bagels. The expats living out there are anxiously awaiting her opening.
  • I'm a big 'ol gentile fan of Tablet Magazine's Unorthodox podcast, which is where I discovered this collection. It was originally born at Tablet as an interactive website so good that it's up for a James Beard award. In book form, it's supplemented with wonderful recipes. It's worth reading jsut because of the array of amazing writers who have taken on the various foods (and they use "food" broadly, because the items include both Bazooka Gum and Sweet 'N Low. You don't have to be Jewish to treasure this collection.
  • I loved reading this book and hearing all the different voices and perspectives from so many fantastic Jews! There is so much information to soak up in here that is provided with lively and interesting writing that feels very current, while also rooted in tradition. I plan to get a few more copies to give to friends as gifts!

  • Growing up in Queens, NY the home of the greatest bagels and the best deli ( recently closed after 72 years) this book was wonderful to read. Agree re Mallomars although it is a cookie that appears after Labor Day and disappears shortly thereafter. My Mother made gefilte fish; hand chopping 50 lbs. of fish in a wooden bowl as large as an SUV tire, two laborious days. She made the fish until her health failed; the last few years she missed some ingredients but the love was always present. Ebingers Blackout Cake was the best chocolate cake ever sold.
  • The most important book since Sinai!
